May 13, 2012 John Riel Casimero defends his interim flyweight belt in Cebu vs Sammy Gutierrez

Two boxing protagonists will see hot action in the ring on May 13 (2012) in Cebu, Philippines. One is a Filipino, 22 years of age, 5'-4" in height and who with his teammates were mobbed with bottles and chairs by pro-Lazarte fans after he won the fight by 10th round stoppage over Luis Lazarte his opponent in Argentina on Feb. 11, 2012. He was handed the interim International Federation light-flyweight belt only on Thursday, March 8, (2012) by International matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz almost a month after the riot-marred title bout in Argentina. He is John Riel "Quadro Alas" Casimero who was born in Ormoc City, Leyte but now residing in Cebu City. With a fight record of 16 wins, 2 losses and 10 by knockouts, he will defend his hard-earned belt against a tested veteran and a former Mexican champion in the person of Sammy "Guty" Gutierrez, 26, 5'-3", who holds a sterling record of 31 wins, 7 losses, 2 draws and disposing 21 of his foes by knockouts. Pacquiao bestowed the title "The Fighter of the Decade" by the BWAA and the visit to him of Jean-Claude Van Damme

MANNY "Pacman" PACQUIAO lately earned the rare distinction of being named "The Fighter of the Decade" besting other equally renowned boxer such as Bernard Hopkins, Joe Calzaghe, Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez and Marco Antonio Barrera. This recent title was bestowed upon him by the prestigious Boxing Writing Association of America (BWAA). Thus far- in his particular weight division, Pacquiao is considered one of the world's greatest contributions to the field of boxing. We should all be proud- Filipinos and non-Filipinos alike in Manny's achievements. His performance in the ring is unparalleled at this point in time.

Mayweather Jr's father criticized the newly crowned Fighter of the Decade as stupid and crazy for refusing US$40-M that could have accrue to both Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao and for dropping the fight with his son over the disagreement about the Olympic-style drug testing. Pacquiao has already filed a defamation complaint against the Mayweathers for alleging that he was taking in performance enhancing drugs.

Lately, Pacquiao had a surprise visitor in the name of the Belgian Muscle Star Jean-Claude Van Damme who went to the Wild Card Gym in LA where Pacquiao was to pay his respect. Before, Pacquiao had another caller Actor Steven Seagal who expressed interest in shooting a movie with him. Another well-known movie celebrity who also paid Pacquiao a courtesy call is Sylvester Stallone, followed by Action Star Mark Wahlberg who visited Pacquiao at Wild Card Gym in LA. Pacquiao himself is likewise a Philippine actor who starred in such movies as "Anak ng Kumander" and "Wapakman".

Pacquiao with a fight record of 50-3-2-(38) is set to fight Joshua Clottey, alias "The Hitter" of Ghana, West Africa with a fight record of 35-3-(20) at the US $1.2 billion Cowboy's Stadium in Arlington, Texas on March 13. Manny Pacquiao will defend his welterweight title versus Joshua Clottey, the former International Boxing Federation Welterweight Champion and current No. 1 contender.

Mayweather, Jr. on the other hand, is scheduled to battle come May 1 Shane "Sugar" Mosley, 38, at the MGM Grand Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada.

MEXICAN boxer Gerson Guerrero, the supposed opponent of WBA interim super flyweight champion Nonito Donaire was declared unfit to fight for having a detached eye retina. Thus Donaire will have to face a new tough Mexican replacement in the person of Manuel Vargas who last September was defeated by Filipino Donie "Ahas" Nietes via a split decision for the WBO minimum weight title fight in Latin Fury II held in Nayarit, Mexico.

Vargas holds a record of 25-4-1-(11) whereas Donaire tallies 22-1-(14).

This boxing event billed as Latin Fury 13 will happen at the Las Vegas Hilton on Saturday which is Sunday-February 14 in Manila.

(1) Filipino CESO MORALES to box hard for the bantamweight belt against the Mexican title holder FERNANDO MONTIEL; (2) Filipino GERRY PENALOSA versus Puerto Rican ERIC MOREL; (3) Filipino BERNABE CONCEPCION against Puerto Rican MARIO SANTIAGO; (4) UNDERCARD: Filipino MARK MILLEGEN will exchange blows with RAYMOND GATICA..

Unluckily, on that fateful Saturday- Nov. 13, 2009 in Mandalay Bay's House of Blues Boxing Arena, Las Vegas, Gorres (30-2-2-(15) was hit hard in the head with a vicious left hook thrown by his adversary Columbian Luis Melendez (26-4-1-(21). The inevitable happened in the last dying seconds of the 10th- the last round. Gorres survived until the bell and immediately right after, collapsed in his corner. He was taken out of the ring and carried in a stretcher. In the hospital- he was pronounced in coma.

Gorres dominated 9 and 1/2 rounds when tragedy struck. He won the fight by unanimous decision with scores 98-90, 98-90 and 97-91 all in his favor.

Gorres - now recuperating from head surgeries- went to see Pinoy Power 3 primarily to witness and root for fellow Filipino boxer Ciso Morales fight versus Fernando Montiel. Morales- a Boholano boxer record-wise was picked in lieu of the injured Gorres to trade punches versus Montiel. Morales- a green horn- promised Gorres and associates to give his all but- unfortunately- luck eluded him. Early in the initial round, a hard, solid left from the champion Montiel caught Morales in his side, sending him to the rope, grimacing in pain. Just imagine the negative feelings that both Morales and Gorres had suffered in that instant. Well, that's life. A coin has always 2 sides.

Before the boxing matches ended, Manny Pacquiao got the rare chance to extend help to Gorres. Standing in the center of the ring- Pacquiao let known to the huge boxing aficionados attending the occasion the presence of the injured Filipino bantamweight boxer Z "The Dream" Gorres. Pacquiao made an eloquent appeal to the boxing fans to give or donate something to the foundation that he has launced for the benefit of Z. Gorres and his family. It was a touching moment.
