BRIDGES are conceived with the view of providing easy means of transportation. They form part of the vital veins of a country to hasten economic development. They are designed and constructed to provide passage across valleys, lakes, rivers, lagoons, shores, etc. but people who have lost hope in finding solutions to their problems, attached lurid meanings to them. They see them as loyal accomplices in their desire to put an end to their problems by committing suicide. Finding the opportune time, they jumped from the bridge decks down to their watery graves below. Wikipedia reports that over one million people commit suicide every year. The WHO estimates that it is the 13th leading cause of death worldwide. It is the leading cause of death among teenagers and adults under 35. There are an estimated 10 to 20 million non-fatal attempted suicides every year worldwide.
